HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan

designer Jo Clark
Finally a voice that makes sense to me!

The law of psycho-physical response: for every suggestion, thought or emotion one entertains, there is a corresponding physiological and chemical response within the body.
The law of harmonious attraction: what we put out in the way of thinking and speaking creates energy that comes back to us - words have energy, power and vibrations that translate into action - instead of contraction say uterine surge or wave, instead of pain or contractions say pressure, sensation, tightening

Hypnosis is a very natural state that most of us exist in during a large part of the day.  When we become engrossed with our work and lose track of time or of what is going on around us, that is hypnosis.  We are in a hypnotic state when we get caught up in daydreams or become so immersed in a movie or television show that we emotionally react to what the actors are experiencing.

Breathing * Relaxation * Visualization * Deepening

Things to remember
* Lateral position: lie on left side, right arm elbow bent with hand on pillow, left leg straight down, right leg bent with knee even with your hip and one or two pillows under
* When you jaw is relaxed the vaginal area will be relaxed as well
* Breathing (belly expands with contraction, mouth closed, tongue at top where pallet meets teeth)
* Guided imagery ideas: rainbow relaxation (floating on mist of changing colors), the opening blossom (obvious), blue satin ribbons (imagine muscles that run horizontal around your uterus as ribbons), arm-wrist relaxation (fingers cupped on surface of bed, picture balloons being tied to wrist), glove relaxation (soft, silver glove of endorphins creates numbing feeling you can transfer to rest of your body), depthometer (soft, flexible inverted thermometer full of clear natural relaxation with 40 gradations)
* relax, drink fluids, keep bladder empty
* don't feel like you have to "push" use gentle nudging breaths downward, keep lower jaw relaxed, don't let breath escape mouth

Ina May's Guide to Chidbirth

A lot of very sane and lovely people I know value this book, so I was surprised how extreme my distaste for my reading experience with this books has been.  I found each page more strange and uncomfortable than the previous, leaving me more stressed about natural childbirth than comforted.  Granted, I entered this books with kind of unique parameters, as a woman who is supportive of efforts to decrease pain but unwilling to go through an epidural experience again, but I still think that Ina May's view swings in a direction that does not necessarily empower and turns childbirth into unrealistic ideals (a whole section on orgasimic birthing - really?!)  I am moving on in my stack of natural childbirth books, still hopeful to find a sane voice but less confident.
