Marquam Trail to Council Crest
Watching the evening rays wink off the Willamette from Portland's highest point at 1,073 feet is ever so much more satisfying when you get there under your own steam. It's 3.7 miles from the Marquam Trail shelter on SW Sam Jackson Pkwy to the top of Council Crest. An easy first mile lets you warm up through a fir and fern shrouded canyon before the real work begins: more than 500 feet of elevation gain in less than a mile
Mount Tabor
Climbing 640-foot Mount Tabor may not seem like enough to turn your quads trembly, but mix in the 287 steps from the entrance at SE 69th and Yamhill to the summit, and even the most sure-footed might falter. Or at least pause for a water break. Of course, the extinct volcano's vistas of Mount Hood and the city are worth stopping for. And once you get to the top, you've got a handful of fir-shaded trails to explore.www.portlandonline.com/parks

The easy path travels well even in blustery conditions, making it ideal for storm-watchers who want to delight in the thunderous waves without getting soaked.
