A Mercy by Toni Morrison

First book of 2009 - A Mercy - was a thoughtful husband-given gift but kind of disappointing.   I love authors that create a distinct voice, and this indeed had one, or several in fact, but the story just didn't compel me as a reader.  It did have moments when it whispered to the core of the human spirit and the injustice of oppression but only very small moments.  Does it need to be said that the imagery was simple but powerful and the rhythm brilliant?  That is the charm of Toni Morrison.
"In the dust where my  heart will remain until night and every day until you understand what I know and long to tell you: to be given dominion over another is a hard thing; to wrest dominion over another over another is a wrong thing; to give dominion of yourself to another is a wicked thing."
