A Short History of Women

Thanks to a surprise stealing of Lucy by my sister, I finished another good book. Good as in delicious but not particularly satisfying. Which is the point, I believe, to make the reader feel a little bit uncomfortable with things that are hard to answer.

Kate Walbert, the author, uses the word antecedent to talk about the women who came before any particular individual. I like that. "You must always look for antecedents, she said. You have to start somewhere."

"'I only just told you, Charles,' Dorothy says. 'I'm not cruel, just unhappy.' The word, so simple, so unvague, so directly what it is, so Dorothy, somehow, completely upends him, and time folds in like a paper airplane to sail weightlessly away."
